Here's the finished version!! I am do incredibly happy with how this has turned out -- I had a very good feeling from the beginning, and a very good feeling when the black and white version was done.
I posted it here:

I knew that colour would really breathe life into it, and I have never been more eager to add colour to an image before! The Mad Hatter deserved all of the colours, and I finally got to use almost all of the colours in my arsenal.
I also changed the colour of his jacket from the reference image from brown to purple (though his jacket DOES actually change colours so I could get away with it).

This is done on 16"x20" black suede illustration board with an Iwata Revolution airbrush, Createx paints, Prismacolour pencil crayons, and black and white charcoal for added highlights and texture.
This took me approximately 6-8 hours start to finish.
